One thing that I love most about the New Year season is its freshness. After much reflection about the previous year comes a clean slate, a renewed mind, goals, and this somewhat magical motivation to get things done. The top of our list this year? Something we admittedly wouldn’t do unless we got to it RIGHT away during that magical and ever-so-fleeting New Year motivation window: repaint the hallway.
When we moved into our little ranch home 2.5 years ago, Mark and I painted the whole interior (Every room! Every door!) before we moved in. It was August–the hottest, most humid month of the year–so there was a lot of flipping the air conditioning on and off. We kept it on when we were there, off when we left. We didn’t realize what damage we were doing until the hallway dried with weird watermarks. And honestly we didn’t really notice either until we’d moved in and thought…hey, did we do that? Oops. Lesson learned. We’ve lived the past 2.5 years ignoring the ugly lines and trying to distract from them with our gallery wall. It kind of worked, but Mark always reminded me that we really needed to paint again. Now try to find that motivation with a toddler and a baby at home…ugh.
It looks like our house flooded–in only the hallway–and left a water line at about 6.5 feet. All the way around the hallway–see those lines on the other side of the hall too? Oops!
Thank goodness January 2018 entered with its magical motivation, and we felt ready to tackle all the home projects with this one at the top of our list. The best part–finding a new paint color! If you know me, you know I genuinely love to talk paint colors (because daughter of an interior designer problems).
I knew I wanted another white, but as any paint-choosing woman knows, there are about 38590153 whites…some with yellows, some with grays, some that are too beige-y, some that look too much like stark white computer paper. I wanted a white that wasn’t too computer paper-y but was also a few shades brighter than than our previous shade. Without any windows, this hallway is one of the darkest spots in our home, and when given the opportunity to brighten the white in a dark space: brighten!
Next stop: Lowe’s. We are there all the time anyway (it’s my husband’s favorite store), so it’s awesome to have a one stop shop to pick up HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams paint. And HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams has a little 2018 motivation magic up their sleeve too! With four on-trend 2018 Color Collections of the Year, it’s easier than ever to bring harmony to your home. Each Color Collection has a range of colors that go together in any combination, helping take the guesswork out of choosing color and giving your home a sense of room-to-room harmony. All you have to do is choose the designer-inspired look you want to achieve from themes like Next Journey, Future Thinker, Thoughtful Living or Individual Mix. Upon browsing their 2018 Color Collections of the Year, I found that ThoughtfulLiving was the one I was drawn to because it already reminds me of the color scheme in our home. There are two whites in that Color Collection, so I pulled the swatches, contemplated, and ultimately chose Greek Villa (HGSW4030).
Hellooooooo, gorgeous white! Greek Villa (HGSW4030), a color from Thoughtful Living, one of the HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams 2018 Color Collections of the Year.
Since the hallway is a high-traffic area (and there are little hands living in our home), we decided to change from our former flat finish to an eggshell finish instead since it’ll make for easier wiping. We used HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams INFINITY Interior Paint and Primer, which meant one-and-done (AKA one coat) ease.
We stocked on supplies by our go-to paint supply brand, Purdy. Mark always does the rolling and I’m the detailer. This little angled brush helped me get all the corners since this hallways is full of doors. (And can we take another moment to talk about how pretty this white is!?!)
Mark rolled away with our Purdy supplies, and I couldn’t stop geeking out about how Greek Villa (HGSW4030) was whiter and brighter just like I wanted. Bye-bye, weird water-but-really-air-conditioning lines on the left!! See ya never.
The hallway is as good as new and now up to par with the rest of the house. Thank goodness! When Hope came over, she immediately noticed that it was a brighter shade which made me happy (#sisterswholovewhitepaintprobs).
If you have a paint project you need to take on and maaaybbbee paint doesn’t excite you as much as it does me (ha!), I promise you I know how to help a sister out. You can take the guesswork and frustration out of coordinating colors in your home by using one of the HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams new 2018 Color Collections of the Year. Just look at these intentionally curated Color Collections, find which one most reflects your likings or your home, and choose from there in confidence knowing that everything will/can/DOES compliment and coordinate! You can also use your dedicated Color Collection to inspire more than just paint colors! Look for similar hues in the upholstery, artwork, and other pieces you decorate with for a perfectly coordinated look. For example, in the Thoughtful Living Color Collection that I chose from, I could visualize how the different paints in the Color Collection were already reflected throughout my home. That made choosing Greek Villa (HGSW4030) a breeze.
Now that this project is done, don’t mind me while I grit my teeth and drag my feet onto the next: the dreaded closet clean out. Eeek! Wish me luck!
