Once upon a time, almost three years ago and before I knew if our firstborn was a girl or a boy, I found this rug. The lover of design in me has known for years that upon having a son, he would have an English themed nursery.
The caveat: I don’t do red.
The problem: red is VERY English when you think of the Union Jack, telephone booths, double decker buses…the list goes on.
Even my not-so-red-loving interior designer mama (I inherited the loathing of red) told me it was okay to have “pops of red” in our English themed nursery. No, no, no. I just couldn’t do it. Even with her design permission to add the tiniest bits of red, my stubborn self was NOT going to let that happen. (Hey Mom! Aren’t you glad I didn’t listen this time?!)
So back to those almost three years ago, I was googling all the “neutral union jack” things and happened upon Lorena Canals UK Flag linen and gray colored rug. A match made in heaven, I’d say! It has stayed in my mind ever since. Fortunately for me, fast forwarding to now, not only was the rug still available, but there were even more mom and kid friendly perks that I hadn’t anticipated.
Here’s the first (and easy to see) one: you can just tell how soft it is. I feel like you can physically see the softness through this picture. It’s the perfect layering rug. When I knew I wanted to bring texture into this room through a natural fiber rug, I didn’t worry for a second knowing this 5×7 Union Jack rug would bring a contrasting super soft and inviting texture, perfectly sat right under the crib. I also love rug layering in general, that made for a fun perk.
Ready for the ultimate mom-friendly/kid-friendly/clumsy-human (HELLO!) perk? It’s machine washable. Say what?! All Lorena Canals rugs can be thrown into the washing machine in the blink of an eye, no qualms about it. Yep, they are soft (check) come in so many fun colors and designs (check), and they fit into any standard sized washer and dryer. So there’s that too — not only can you throw them in the wash, but you can throw them in the DRYER! Y’all! This is a mommy WIN! Last but certainly not least, every rug is handmade with all natural dyes, eco-friendly, and contains no VOCs like most carpeting and rugs.
Since you cannot get them much bigger than 4’8″x6’7″–you know, since they fit in the washing machine–definitely consider them your go-to layering rug for any high traffic space. Of course they have tons of soft colored nursery palette designs, but there are plenty more that extend beyond the nursery. My other crushes are this Berber Beige runner and this moroccan inspired rug…GET IN MY LIFE.
You can find all my favorites (plus PLENTY more) here.
Bonus:Get on that while you can! No code needed.
Not a mama but still digging this idea? Be sure to check out the home collection for grown-up spaces that aren’t limited to kiddo rooms! And while you’re at it, you can shop washable cushions shop washable cushions (!) too.
Full Disclosure: I was given a this rug in coordination with the One Room Challenge; however, all opinions are my own.
